Keep following trends, and everyone starts to look alike.
Inspiration, yes. Blending into the background, less so. A trend should be a direction to explore, not an identity.

Looking good is not enough of a direction.
You can like a colour, an animation or a layout without it fitting the story you want to tell. The question is not just “does it look good?” but “does it feel like me, and does it serve my message?”
Look around to make better choices.
References are useful. They open up possibilities and give us words for our preferences. But they become interesting when we understand what draws us in: the rhythm, the simplicity, the humour, the way an idea is presented. You can borrow a principle without copying its form.
Personality is built in the details.
The tone of the writing, the images, the spacing, the words on the buttons: every choice contributes to the overall impression. A brand can be understated and recognizable. It can also be expressive without piling on effects.
Keep the freedom to do things differently.
A trend can be the right answer. It can also be a detour. For me, the most interesting approach is still to choose what suits the project. And to be able to explain why, even if the answer is not on the latest mood board.
